Remodeling Savvy by Fred V. Peters
Be Prepared-
Life in a Construction Zone
After much time dreaming and planning, your project is about to begin. Knowing what the process will involve will help you deal with the inconvenience inevitable in a remodeling project. Some things to keep in mind:
Your home, or at least a portion of it, will become a construction zone.
There will be an array of workers you don’t know (at least at first) in your otherwise private home.
In almost every project there will be some demolition involved. This can be very disheartening to a homeowner, with the mess and the shock of suddenly seeing part of the familiar space around you reduced to rubble. But remember, you have to break eggs to make an omelet.
Portions of your lawn, driveway, garage, basement etc. will probably be used for staging of materials and equipment.
There will be times when things are proceeding much faster than you expected, for example during demolition and framing, and then things will seem to come to a crawl.
There will probably be some setbacks caused by weather, unforseen conditions, or as a result of “Murphy’s Law”.
A low point in homeowners’ morale often occurs about the time when the sheetrock is taped and finished. (It’s a messy process). But take heart, from here on things get much better as the finishes begin to be applied and you see your dreams taking shape.
I hope I haven’t scared you. A good, experienced contractor will do a lot to make the experience as pleasant and worry free as possible. More on this later.
